The podcast “Safe For Work” is framed as an advice show that has proven to be so much more. While most episodes do have a call-in structure, where listeners leave messages about their career-related conundrums for the hosts to answer, the discussions often expand to include big-picture issues relating to the working world today.
Case in point: one caller had a complaint about her boss’s stubbornness when it came to giving her a designated space for breastfeeding while at the office. This turned into a conversation ranging over two episodes about how employers can (and must) make workplaces comfortable for parents, and all the reasons why they often don’t. The host also had plenty of advice for the caller about how she could go about advocating for her rights.
Other episodes tackle problems like how and when to switch career tracks, how to ask for a raise, how to go freelance after a long time working in-house, what to do with unruly coworkers, and how to become more tech-savvy to keep up with the times. Even when I can’t personally relate to the exact situation under discussion, I always learn something about handling tricky situations, or about what other people face in their daily working lives.
