piqd? What? Why?

Welcome dear reader,

I have no idea how you ended up here, and maybe you don’t know either. If that's the case, then this short introduction is for you.

What is piqd?

The idea is really simple: experts in various fields recommend an outstanding piece of journalism once a week and accompany their recommendations with a short review, mainly summarising the core arguments and (implicitly) answering the question: "why should you (as in 'you, dear reader') care?"

No hate, no hassle, no fake news.

Social media is great for many things. Providing users with reliable information is not one of them. In that regard, we see piqd as an alternative to Facebook & co. There’s no hate, no hassle, no fake news. Just our piqers recommending and commenting on the best journalism they find online.

Global perspectives

Technology was supposed to bring us closer together, but in fact, we’re drifting further apart. The world is shrinking as media outlets hardly sustain correspondents and the attention economy on social media drives us toward the same big news items everyone is talking about. piqd is our humble attempt to provide a global perspective on the topics we cover.

New piq on the block?

piqd started in Germany in 2015, and since then has grown to be one of the biggest journalistic newsletters in the country. It’s funded by the philanthropist Konrad Schwingenstein, grandson of August Schwingenstein who co-founded Süddeutsche Zeitung, one of Europe’s biggest quality newspapers. With the English version, we hope to be at least as successful, but most of all we hope you like it. And if you don’t like it, please tell me why: [email protected]

Have fun exploring your feed and we'll see you soon.

Best

@Srinivasan Thiruvengadam Got it. The biggest difference to social networks is, that we don't rely on algorithmic but on human curation. I think all those platforms are amazing for some use cases, but like I wrote in the text above: Finding reliable and high-quality information is not among them. Also we focus very much on diversity to get some more voices into our echo chambers. Would be honored, if you give it a try for a few days and let me know if you think, we keep our promise.
