The Pay Check: Why Do Women Still Make A Lot Less Money Than Men?

The gender pay gap is 20% in the United States. But this headline number, which varies depending on whether you're a woman of color, fails to explain the intricacies and complexities of how this takes place in the workplace. The Pay Check is a podcast by Bloomberg's Rebecca Greenfield, exploring the daily realities of the gender pay disparity, a "big, expensive, global mystery".

Throughout the season, Greenfield uncovers how companies go to great lengths to hide the true extent of the compensation they offer men and women for the same jobs. And the reasons why the problem is both so persistent in history, and why some people still seem to believe that the entire thing is explained by choices women make about family and career.

The podcast is both informative and entertaining. Greenfield takes you through experiments with policies in the UK and Iceland, for example, which purport to shame companies into paying equally. She also takes us to a contract negotiation that went awry for comedian and actress Mo'Nique.
