He Nearly Lost His Whole Family — Now He Fears Being Deported

Last winter, Said Norzai and his 10-year-old son Wali Khan arrived in the United Kingdom. They fled from the Taliban in their homecountry Afghanistan. During the trip to Europe, Norzai lost his wife and six children.

Norzai hoped that he and his son could start a new life in the UK. However, British migration and asylum policies seem to destroy their dream.

Both are traumatized by the events in their war-torn homecountry and the loss of their family. However, Norzai's asylum request has been rejected by British authorities. Additionally, the envelope with the important document sat unopened and unread for three months. Norzai, a farmer, cannot read his native Pashto, let alone English, and says he did not recognise that the letter was addressed to him.

Now, he might be deported very soon.

Although many people are supporting Norzai, he feels hopeless. "The feeling of statelessness makes it worse," he says.

“It started in the jungle in Calais, it was minor in Calais but made worse when I came here.” What made it worse? “This feeling of statelessness.”
