Poetry In The Vast And Chaotic Social Media

"Poetry to me is stumbling around in the dark searching for the right words to describe that feeling I get when she smiles in her sleep."

—Atticus

Social media is anarchic, turbulent, disordered and abysmal. People meet, break up, play and live on their devices, following, unfollowing and scrolling up and down the profiles of people they love, people they hate, people they admire and people they despise. Social media is the house of billions of selfies (24 billion last year), millions of food pictures (300 million just on Instagram), uncountable pet portraits and... Art, in this case, poetry.

The demand in the literary market for poetry is nearly non-existent. Most publishing companies reject the risk of printing this genre. So what options are the hundreds of poets out there left with? Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter. According to a study by The Pew Research Center millennials are out-reading older generations, and apparently out-writing too.

This list by Vogue introduces us to the ten most popular social media poets on the internet, giving us a sneak peek of their work and their sites to follow. Their short poems are a perfect little dose of beauty to make part of our routine.
