#MeToo Movement And Modern-Day Slavery In Agriculture

The #MeToo movement encouraged women from all over the world to raise their voice against sexual assault, harassment, and unequal salaries.

It all started soon after the public revelations of sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Since then stories of sexual harassment and assault have been flowing on a daily basis from the entertainment, media, and tech industries. However studies reveal that female low-wage workers working in agriculture, who are disproportionately women of color, are extremely susceptible to harassment in their workplace, too.

According to Human Rights Watch, nearly all of the farm workers interviewed said they had experienced sexual violence or harassment or knew someone who had. In 2010, a study found that of 150 Mexican women working in the Central Valley in California, 80 percent had experienced sexual harassment.

This Atlantic piece tells the story of an undocumented Guatemalan immigrant in Florida. This is the other side of the coin that needs more attention.
