Central America Turns To Asia – Trump's Trade Revisionism Prompts Talk Of Stronger South-South Links

The Trump administration's approach to commercial policy and diplomacy has sent jitters throughout the international trade system – within the first few days in office, Trump has already torpedoed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and is likely to lead to a revision of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). 

But while most analysts focus on the potential disruption in the US' relationships with Mexico, Asia and other key allies, other smaller players are jumping to the foreground, eyeing opportunities to strengthen South–South bonds. 

In this piece, the author outlines a strategy to leverage Central America's participation in global trade. Using both its strategic position and its trade openness, the often overlooked subregion in Latin America could become the new nexus between Asia and the Americas.
