Canada's Secret Asylum Program For Chechnya's LGBTQ Persecution Victims

The Canadian country was already struggling to accommodate thousands of Haitian asylum seekers when, five months ago, Chechnya began what they call a 'gay purge', which means torturing, imprisoning and murdering anybody suspicious of homosexuality.

For three months, the federal government has been secretly spiriting gay Chechen men from Russia to Canada, under a clandestine program unique in the world. The program has been a closely held secret within the government for months. Non-governmental organizations that were involved have also kept silent, for fear that any leaks could imperil the people they were trying to help.

Now that the presence of gay Chechen refugees in Canada is no longer a secret, they will be able to access more easily the support services they need to integrate successfully into Canadian society.

For as prime minister Justin Trudeau stated:

Human rights have no borders.”
