Fleeing The Darkness

Sebastien Van Malleghem’s photographs have always been somehow obscure, from documenting his country’s prisons to following embalmers as they juggled dozens of bodies each day in Mexico City.

The Belgium photojournalist has seen and documented the darkest and most sinister sides of every country he has set foot on. And he was wonderful doing so, yet, in his own words: "When you stay too long doing the same thing, you start to suffocate". He ended up in Scandinavia with the intention of taking a break from all of this woe, but couldn't hold himself from his passion and one day he took his camera, hoping to find his classic motives ... And failed, he found nothing, and out of this 'nothingness' he discovered a new side of him and his art.

“I did breathe and relax probably for the first time in my life, taking pictures that moved me without thinking. I discovered more precisely why and what I love to photograph. The bitterness of moments, humans living, the strong rain and wind, emotions, night, religion, death, water, nature, friends, unknowns, silhouettes.”
