Isles of Scilly: A Test Bed For Smart Grid Technology

Isles of Scilly are an archipelago situated just off the coast of Cornwall, UK. Currently its energy system is dependent on an undersea cable from the mainland and an ageing power station.

A smart grid project, based on new software platforms managing supply and demand through renewables, energy storage and electric vehicles, should make the islands energy independent within just a few years.

What I found interesting is how the project sets to demonstrate that ordinary people will play a key role in the future energy systems. That it would actually be technically feasible to create democratic, reliable, cost-effective, low-carbon energy mechanisms that deliver savings to homeowners and the community.

If small "energy internets" like this one are successful on islands, then they can easily be replicated in cities as well.

would be great to compare these efforts with those in spain (canarias: isla de el hierro) and portugal (açores: graciosa, fajal). and, of course, with those on the island of eigg, scottland (was featured here: http://www.bbc.com/fut...).

@Urszula Papajak you have the shiny projects on the european level, sure, but you also have the problems on the local level, see here > http://euanmearns.com/...
(would be worth the journalistic effort to investigate this a little deeper)

Sorry, that was a proofreading mistake. The piqer correctly wrote "Scilly". We changed it back now. Thanks for your comment.

@Frederik Fischer no issue! proofreaders - or 'autocorrect' for that matter - are still a source of many enjoyable typos. glad the piq proofreader didn't change 'Scilly' to 'silly'.

@Frederik Fischer people who knew 'babelfish' as the first online tool for auto-translate had actually way more fun than we have 1.5 decades later with our autocorrects, though.

@Frederik Fischer i tend to dissent. progress *is* fun - yet not always funny, admittedly (turning the piqd.com comments section into a chatroom, which is 1. progress, and 2. fun)

@User deleted True that:) Everyone's copying Slack these days. Some better (others) than others (us).

@Frederik Fischer ...copying slack. no, no, piqd.de/piqd.com aren't doing it all too bad with their comments sections. they work reasonably well, work nicely on mobile, and the notifications are really helpful for keeping up. some possibilities to edit ones own comments would be nice (typos!), and some formatting options, too. both minor points. and, personally, i prefer this way of communicating vastly over twitter or facebook...

@Urszula Papajak actually i stumbled over the teaser picture of the 'isles of sicily' in the first place, even before continuing with reading "...off the coast of Cornwall, UK." by chance, i know the islands around sicily (yes, sicily) rather well from various vacations and there was not even the faintest match with the teaser picture. for journalists, this may mean that taking the (teaser-)pictures of an article as support for proofreading isn't the worst idea since most of us westerners (WEIRDOs) have pretty good visual memories. will take some time before AI-driven proofreaders get equipped with this proficiency : )
