Darknet Diaries is a podcast focusing on the aspects of the Internet that people are often reluctant to talk about. It aims to cover true stories about hackers, defenders, threats, malware, botnets, breaches, and privacy from the dark side of the Internet.
In this episode titled Operation Bayonet, the show focuses on the story of AlphaBay Market which was known to be the most popular market of the darknet.
AlphaBay Market used to operate on an onion service of the Tor network, and it was shut down in 2017 after law enforcement action as part of Operation Bayonet. In the episode Jack Rhysider, host of the show and a veteran to the issue of cyber security, focuses on the details of the operation and explains the nature of darknet markets. By listening to this show, not only will you have information about how law enforcement agencies operate in the darknet, but you will also understand what kind of commercial transactions take place there and what their possible risks are. You will also learn about how services like Bitcoin and VPN are used for transactions in the darknet and what kind of products are sold there.
If you are interested in the technical structure of the darknet or in understanding the mechanisms of anonymity, there is a brief section about how the process of anonymization works within the episode. You will also learn what may harm your anonymity while you are on the darknet. In this sense, this episode is not only about an FBI operation against AlphaBay Market, nor is it a piece of propaganda stating that law enforcement is everywhere and you will be caught no matter what you do. It is an episode about the nature of the darknet.
