Interview With Adaptive Biotechnologies
Episode 38 of the Timmerman report is a discussion with the co-founders of Seattle-based Adaptive Biotechnologies. The company was founded by two brothers: a physicist turned computational biologist and an outgoing businessman.
The company focuses on medical technology with an emphasis on the adaptive immune system and using it as a diagnostic tool. Its research has resulted in revelations on the genes associated with T cell function and adaptation whereas many of its contemporaries focused on B cell antigens and their roles in immunity. This difference in focus led to an expanded opportunity to study the immune system.
As quoted by one of the interviewees: "The adaptive immune system is the best diagnostic tool in the world. We are just developing a way to read it." The research done by this company has substantial opportunity to relieve problems associated with autoimmune disorders and cancers. Its goal for the foreseeable future is to work towards a universal, blood-based therapy for disease identification based on T cell antigens.
