After leaving academic research I helped form Prophase BioStudios and built a laboratory out of a local Hackerspace.
Using the laboratory at Prophase BioStudios I started doing my own independent experiments that led me to create my Biomanufacturing company, Portunus.
My interests are primarily in biotechnology, particularly in the realms of fabrication and human enhancement.
Commercial Gene Therapy Manufacturing
This episode of the Cell Culture Dish Podcast is a recording of Brandy Sargent's panel at the Cell and Gene Therapy Bioprocessing and Commercialization conference in 2018. The panel covers new manufacturing techniques and the regulatory concerns around them. The panel includes representatives from Pall Biotech, Biotech Logic, Vironova and Beckman Coulter Life Sciences.
This, slightly more technical, podcast episode will be interesting to someone wanting to learn about the specifics of what changes are being made in the Biomanufacturing industry. Much of the panel talks about specific procedures and equipment relative to those previously used for Gene Therapy manufacturing.
A lot of the discussion goes into how to make the manufacturing of gene therapies more scalable and thus affordable for the end user as well as the increasing use of new cell lines. A lot of the technologies that were common for purification and quality testing in the biomanufacturing industry are falling out of vogue in the name increased scale.
While dense, this podcast is well worth a listen to someone looking for a deeper understanding of the lab side of the biotech industry and the regulations around it.
