After leaving academic research I helped form Prophase BioStudios and built a laboratory out of a local Hackerspace.
Using the laboratory at Prophase BioStudios I started doing my own independent experiments that led me to create my Biomanufacturing company, Portunus.
My interests are primarily in biotechnology, particularly in the realms of fabrication and human enhancement.
Chernobyl, Then And Now, Part 1
This episode of BioTech Nation discusses the circumstances surrounding the Chernobyl disaster. The episode begins with a quick overview of events that have gone on in Biotech in recent days, and it is hosted by Dr. Moira Gunn.
In her interview with journalist Adam Higginbotham, Dr.Gunn discusses the human error that led to the disaster and lack of crucial personnel at the plant. Described as a young man's game, working at the Chernobyl plant took a massive toll on an individual's sleep schedule and stress levels. The job required all night shifts, often times extended shifts and a lot of high pressure work. As such, vital personnel were often in short supply. The complexities of managing a nuclear reactor are considered in the podcast and described in great detail.
