Last month, US Presidential Press Secretary Sean Spicer suggested a link between the opioid crisis in America and the use of recreational marijuana. However, evidence shows the contrary to be true. In fact, research has shown that marijuana could be used to combat opioid addiction.
In states with “permissive pot” laws — or states that allow marijuana use on the some level (whether recreational or medicinal) — the amount of opioid prescriptions has notably decreased. Death rates from overdoses in these regions have also gone down. In addition to saving lives, medical marijuana also has the potential to save millions on healthcare costs.
