The Radical Power Of Becoming A Funny Girl

In the second issue of their series "How We'll Win"—an exploration of the fight for equality—Quartz takes on the question of how we can make the next generation of girls understand their power.

The first story is about the empowering quality of humor and about how we can teach girls to have confidence in themselves and their humor "to not just poke, but power-drill, holes in world’s most powerful institutions". A startup organization is working with teenage girls and underrepresented people and teaching them how to write a joke and how to find their own comedic voice.

"In a world that goes out of its way to instill self-doubt in girls from a young age, Gold Comedy founder Lynn Harris—a standup comedian herself—says that this kind of training can teach teenage girls to take up space, take risks, and own their flaws."

The other seven stories of this issue include an Indian female skateboarder who is introducing girls to a male-dominated sport and creating a space for them to feel strong in public spaces. Another one is about parents who raise their children to be gender neutral in order to fight harmful stereotypes. Yet another is about breaking down narratives about beauty and self-worth, and so on. A must read for both girls and boys of all ages out there.
