Cannabis laws in the U.S. are complex, but John Oliver, host of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”, covers the topic in a hilarious yet poignant fashion.
In the clip found in this review, Oliver humorously yet seriously discusses the legal limbo that is cannabis in America. He illustrates the reality of a failed drug war, and states that the issue affects everything from environmental regulations to international treaties.
“This is no longer a fringe issue,” said Oliver, who pointed out that public opinion in America has grown from 12 to 60 percent from 1969 to today.
“Marijuana is not a schedule I drug any more than a hedgehog is an apex predator,” said Oliver.
But federally, the U.S. recognizes cannabis as a schedule I drug.
This means that, even if a business or a patient is abiding by state law, they are still in serious danger of federal prosecution ... And: “That’s not your weed-induced paranoia,” Oliver said.
Overall, Oliver shows the ridiculousness behind the illegality of cannabis, and urges viewers to act now to change federal policy.
