Danielle Batist is an experienced freelance journalist, founder of Journopreneur and co-founder of the Constructive Journalism Project. She lived and worked all around the globe and covered global and local stories of poverty, exclusion and injustice. Increasingly, she moved beyond ‘problem-reporting’ to include stories about the solutions she found. She witnessed the birth of the new nation of South Sudan and interviewed the Dalai Lama. She reported for Al Jazeera, BBC and the Guardian and regularly advises independent media organisations on innovation and sustainability. She loves bringing stories to the world and finding the appropriate platforms to do so. The transformation of traditional media fascinates rather than scares her. While both the medium and the message are changing, she believes the need for good storytelling remains.
We all know someone like this. You can be close friends or good colleagues for years, enjoy each other’s company, attend work events and parties together and have interesting conversations. All is fine … until you get the board games out. All of a sudden, this person you thought you knew well transforms into an eyes-on-the-prize fanatic. Before long, everyone else at the table has had enough, and not just the game but the evening is ruined.
Sounds familiar? Cue Co-opoly: a board game where everyone wins. Since its main aim is solidarity, it seems only fitting that it came to life through a crowdfunding campaign. I was intrigued to read about it this article in the solutions-focused Yes Magazine.
“While setting up the board, my friend pointed out that it must be missing pieces because there was only one player piece. After shaking the box a bit to find the missing pieces, we had a good laugh instead: There is only one piece because we were all on the same team! Starting a game that way certainly lightens the mood.”
And there’s other games too, like Rise Up, which raised more than US$50,000 on Kickstarter last year. So next time you fancy a game night that stays fun until the end, why not try a game for good?
