Have you ever heard of apathy? It is something less than depression but more than just sadness. It is being in a state of indifference. A phase of your life when you do whatever you have to do but with no feeling and or emotion attached to it.
In a sense, it’s something like falling in love. You can describe it all you want but only the person who experiences it can explain it. Paradoxically, what makes the feeling of apathy unique is that it’s essentially the feeling of not feeling. No sadness, no anger, no regrets!
It can include fear of failure in addition to negative thoughts with an inability to reverse them.
In a relationship, apathy is really dangerous. It is the opposite face of love, and the opposite face of love is not hate, because in hate there are emotions but in apathy, the individual does not care at all. Physical apathy kills the intimate relationship.
A person is too numb to have any emotion to react. Trauma can be one reason behind apathy. The use of drugs or marijuana can lead to it.
Mostly, this condition can be felt when a person loses something or someone they really cared for, some loss that left the individual not simply disappointed but demoralized, pessimistic or downright hopeless.
Something inside you gives up the attempts to create a joyful future. In a relationship, it comes when a couple or one of the partners loses hope that a negative situation will change for the better and everything will stay the same.
Apathetic people simply walk through life without living in it. What can they do to leave this state of mind? To find out more about this condition and have some ideas about how to deal with such a situation, listen to this podcast.
