I was born in 1987 in Bucharest. I studied Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Bucharest. For two years I worked in a psychotherapy practice, dealing with gambling addicts. I'm an independent reporter, writing and doing video reportages mostly about social and political issues. I am currently based in Jena.
This video series presents different experiences that six women have had with motherhood. The six stories were selected by the newspaper out of 1300 testimonies sent in by its readers, specifically because they were so distinct from one another, thus showing the deeply individual aspect of motherhood.
Being a mother means, for one woman, diving into her relationship with her own mother, dealing with her suicidal tendencies and making a conscious decision to live. For another, it means aiming higher than her mom and grandma, by not having children at an early age and becoming a housewife. Another woman, who became a mother when she was a teenager, tells about the inner conflict between regretting having not lived her youth and enjoying watching her daughter do all the things she couldn’t.
The series is not all-encompassing, and I don’t think it intended to be, but nonetheless it’s such a necessary testimony. Hopefully, it will help women ease into their new identities as mothers with less pressure to be “ideal”. In the words of one woman:
“You don’t learn everything first and then apply it. It all just happens and you figure it out.”
