The international legalization movement is driven by the potential to increase public health. While usage continues to rise across different age groups, little research or medical advice is available to the millions of cannabis users around the world.
This June, a group of the world’s leading cannabis experts released 10 guidelines (similar to other medical guidelines), aimed at lowering the health risks associated with using cannabis. Its authors noted the failure of prohibition, and the necessity of practical guidance as the world moves forward with both medical and recreational policies.
The first rule researchers suggest is realizing that there’s no such thing as risk-free drug use. Those with a history of drug abuse, or those who are prone to adverse reactions, should avoid cannabis altogether. Additionally, authors note that those who use cannabis heavily before the age of 16 risk the most adverse health effects. Aside from abstaining, researchers advocate users to avoid synthetic cannabis, and strains high in THC and low in CBD. Also recommended: find another way to ingest cannabis than by smoking it, and wait six hours before driving.
Of course, one of the greatest things about the cannabis industry is its diversity. There are plenty of ways to receive the benefits of cannabis, such as edibles and tinctures, but moderation is always key.
