This was an incident with a bitter aftertaste that will not easily go away. It happened io May 16, during Turkish President Erdoğan's (first) visit to meet Trump, his counterpart in Washington DC. The meeting left no other trace than handshakes between the two, with wry smiles and a photo op, but the brutal clash outside the Turkish embassy residency between Erdoğan's body guards and a small group of demonstrators, mainly Kurds and some Yezidis, definitely did. The demonstrators had received permission - though they did not have to - from the police. They were shouting critical slogans - some of them going as far as "terrorist Erdoğan" - when Erdoğan's security detail seemed to launch an orchestrated attack, beating many of them severely in the face and head, while American police looked as if it had lost control.
The incident has led to an enormous outcry by American politicians such as Republican senator John McCain as well as many others, who called for an apology and deportation of the Turkish ambassador, who was seen as threatening the American police officers.
This was unique, in the sense that such aggression by a foreign delegation never took place on US soil before.
The incident was documented from several angles, and was very popular for the global public, but more importantly, for the police investigating the scene. This is the story, told from witness angles, with the help of footage and tweets from various sources.
The main question is whether it was Erdoğan himself who ordered his detail to attack peaceful demonstrators, and if so, will he and his team get away with it?
