I am an Australian freelance journalist focussing on conflicts, politics, and warzones around the world. I have been working as a journalist for over 5 years, having reported from Australia, Germany, China, Egypt, Palestine, and Ukraine. I am especially interested in the way that new technologies are being used in conflict zones in unexpected and often disturbing ways. During my time working as a journalist, I also co-founded open-source war reporting site Conflict News.
One of the most interesting observations I have made over my time working as a journalist is how the media rapidly loses interest in conflicts around the world, once the immediate crisis has passed. Perhaps the best current example of this is the war in Ukraine.
Officially, after a ceasefire agreement in 2015, the conflict was ‘frozen’ and major hostilities ceased. The fact of the matter, however, is that while the frontlines are that much, heavy fighting continues. Political forces on both sides are desperate to achieve small victories, and will often mount costly small-scale offensives with little strategic value. In Kiev, far-right groups are returning from the front and attempting to gain political power, and in the pro-Russian rebel-held territories, the autocratic ‘government’ is making life tougher than ever.
Half the population fled, the streets are more or less empty. You’ll never find a traffic jam there, unless it’s a convoy of armoured vehicles…
In this informative episode of Popular Front – a podcast dedicated to covering unreported and niche aspects of the world’s conflicts – Christopher Miller from Radio Free Europe explains in depth this ongoing crisis and the dynamics which are playing out both in the war zone and in Ukraine in general.
