Turkey's Imprisoned Journalists Recount Life Behind Bars

This is the new series by the Expression Interrupted, compiling data about the prison conditions of journalists in Turkey. This is a website launched by the Platform for Independent Journalism P24, in cooperation with Article 19 to keep track of numbers of jailed journalists and academics in Turkey. Expression Interrupted aims to provide timely and reliable information on freedom of expression cases and developments and keeps track of the ongoing trials through a dedicated calendar.

P24 describes this project as follows:

The following questionnaire, conducted by P24 Platform for Independent Journalism, is part of a series aimed at revealing the conditions faced by journalists in prison in Turkey, either in pretrial detention or under a sentence. In addition to documenting the problems journalists might be facing during their time in prison, this series is also aimed at helping improve their prison environment.

The first in the series is the plight of Nedim Türfent, who answered the questionnaire during a prison visit by P24’s lawyers in June 2018.

Journalist Nedim Türfent has been in prison since 13 May 2016 on charges relating to his reporting with the Kurdish news agency DİHA. This agency was shut down by the government in October 2016.

Even though Türfent is being held in Van, his trials were took place in Hakkari, 66 miles (107 km) away. Therefore he was not physically present at his trials. Instead, Türfent "attended" trials through an audio-visual system — a system that often makes it difficult for defendants to hear the judge, prosecutors, and witnesses. Without much possibility to defend himself, he was nevertheless found guilty. He was sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison at the end of 2017.

Nedim Türfent is one of the 182 journalists imprisoned in Turkey. The numbers keep escalating almost every other day.

This series on their prison conditions opens up a window to their caged lives.
