The Trauma Of Being A Black Activist: A Heart-Rending Read & The Best Article I've Read In Months

It's rare that an article brings me to tears. But this profile of a Chicago pastor and community activist, Jedidiah Brown, is so poignant and moving that my eyes were streaming before I was even a quarter of the way through the piece.

Journalist Ben Austen's prose does a brilliant job of depicting the entirety of Brown — with all his struggles, internal conflict, flaws, boundless generosity and desire to help his community. We feel his struggle to improve his community as though it was our own, his grief when more and more young black men are shot and killed, his frustration when his bid to help and make things better are rejected by other black activists, bringing him to the brink of suicide. The long read is almost like a short, Dickensonian novel, with Brown as the protagonist and Chicago's south-side African-American community as the setting.

If you read one article this month, read this one: You won't regret it.
