The Story Of Bowe Bergdahl
Without any doubt, the story of former US soldier Bowe Bergdahl has become pretty famous during the last years.
Bergdahl was held captive by the Afghan Taliban. The notorious Haqqani network, mainly active in the Afghan-Pakistani border region, was responsible for the abduction.
In 2014, Bergdahl was released as part of a deal which included the "Guantanamo Five", five top Taliban officials who were held captive for years in the American torture prison.
During his captivity, Bergdahl learnt Pashto, played volleyball with the Taliban and – according to some sources – also became friends with some Haqqani leaders.
Until today, many of Bergdahl's former comrades believe that he was not really captured. Instead, he deserted. Bergdahl insists that he was indeed imprisoned by force and also tortured by the militants. Donald Trump once called Bergdahl a "dirty, rotten traitor".
Until today, many questions remain unanswered. However, this Serial podcast about Bergdahl's case is worth listening to. It consists of precise journalistic work and probably offers more details than anything else published about Bergdahl.
