An interesting piece by the Guardian's George Monbiot on far-right conspiracy theories on the war in Syria, which cites different examples. One of them is the Assad regime's chemical attack in Khan Shaykhun that killed almost 100 people. Monbiot describes the event as follows:
There is nothing surprising about this. The Syrian government has a long history of chemical weapons use, and the OPCW’s conclusions concur with a wealth of witness testimony. But a major propaganda effort has sought to discredit such testimony, and characterise the atrocity as a “false-flag attack”.
But who started the propaganda effort?
Right-wing media circles such as Infowars cooperated with pro-Assad media outlets to spread the "story". Youtube bloggers like Mimi Al-Laham, mainly known as PartisanGirl, a very open supporter of the Assad regime who participated in far-right events in Europe, helped to do so, too.
This is happening regularly, and also involving other issues such as the White Helmets. The first responders became famous by saving the lives of civilians who have been bombed by Assad's army or the Russian and American military. But thanks to a huge propaganda campaign against them, also generated by right-wing media outlets and channels of the Assad regime and the Russian government, many people believe that these rescuers are "terrorists".
Unfortunately, a lot of these far-right conspiracy theories also reached the political left in many Western countries.
Good article, but it's worth noting these same conspiracy theories are also being peddled by figures on the far-left who should know better, in the name of anti-Imperialism, and anti-Regime Change.
