Emran Feroz is an Afghan-Austrian journalist currently based in Stuttgart, Germany. He is regularly writing from Afghanistan, often focusing on the Middle East, Central Asia, drone warfare, refugee policies and human rights. Emran is writing in both German and English. His work has already appeared in international media outlets such as Al Jazeera, The Intercept, Alternet, The Atlantic or the New York Times and in various German and Austrian news papers and magazines.
Ashraf Ghani, the Afghan President himself, has written a remarkable Op-Ed for the New York Times.
Ghani, who used to be a university professor known for his intellectual qualities, has become a controversial politician. While he gathered many supporters, especially educated young people, around him, minorities claim that he has authoritarian tendencies and is solely focusing on his Pashtun ethnicity.
Among insurgent groups, especially the Taliban, Ghani has gained a reputation of being extremely loyal towards Washington—much more than this predecessor Hamid Karzai.
However, Ghani started a peace campaign with the Taliban that surprised many people and reached its peak during a ceasefire on Eid, the holiday after the Islamic month of Ramadan.
In his NYT piece, Ghani describes why he continues to be realistic in reaching a peace agreement with the Taliban, and he points out that he is willing to talk with the insurgents anywhere at any time.
