It is well known that the Hungarian government is one of the most racist and anti-refugee governments in the whole of Europe. Since racism and hatred are institutionalized by politics, refugees and migrants live a very harsh life in Hungary.
However, not all Hungarians are racists or neo-Nazis. Actually, a lot of them supported refugee rights during the last years, especially lawyers, human rights activists and others.
But now they are going to face harsh times too. A new legislation could render printing leaflets with information for refugees and offering them food or legal advice a criminal offence.
The legislation is called the "Stop Soros Act", reflecting the government's antipathy towards billionaire philanthropist George Soros, whom it accuses of encouraging Muslim immigration to Europe. In fact, this is just another example of how antisemitism and Islamophobia go hand in hand. Additionally, the constitution will also be amended to prevent other EU countries from transferring asylum seekers to Hungary.
