Emran Feroz is an Afghan-Austrian journalist currently based in Stuttgart, Germany. He is regularly writing from Afghanistan, often focusing on the Middle East, Central Asia, drone warfare, refugee policies and human rights. Emran is writing in both German and English. His work has already appeared in international media outlets such as Al Jazeera, The Intercept, Alternet, The Atlantic or the New York Times and in various German and Austrian news papers and magazines.
Recently, a sad and disgusting reality of the Afghan war has been revealed.
According to the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the widows of Afghan soldiers have been forced to perform sexual favors before they could obtain the pension benefits of their dead husbands.
The culprits are military officials themselves.
SIGAR's research has been conducted through dozens of interviews. It reveals how corrupt and rotten Afghanistan's security forces, mainly trained and supported by US-lead NATO forces, are.
The report also shows the deep corruption and extortion inside the security forces.
“High-level corruption, such as that exhibited by some ANDSF leaders, is likely to promote lower-level corruption, as a culture of impunity starts at the top and then normalizes corrupt behavior within the entire system,” the report says.
This reality will prevail in Afghanistan — and affect the country's future for the upcoming decades.
