Mostly, when people talk about drone warfare these days, they think of former US President Barack Obama.
It is very true that during his presidency, Obama pushed the drone programme of both the CIA and the Pentagon like no one before him. Under Obama, drone assassinations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and other countries became one of the signatures of American foreign policy.
However, Obama's records in these terms might be broken very soon.
Since Donald Trump took over the White House, US drone wars have increased aggressively all over the world. In his first days in office, Trump drone murdered 23 civilians in the village of Yakla in Yemen. Ten children were among the victims.
According to current data, Trump's first year has resulted in more loss of life from drone strikes in the four mentioned countries than all eight years of Obama's presidency combined.
Or as the article says:
This is now industrial-scale executions, hugely expanded in both scale and callousness, conducted with no regard for human life or human rights.
And unfortunately, we cannot hope that this is going to change anytime soon.
