Between Apples And The Taliban

Worth listening to episode of BBC's The Fifth Floor with Afghan journalist Auliya Atrafi

Atrafi, who works with the channel's Pashto service, recently travelled to Wardak province near Kabul. Wardak is a beautiful place mainly known for its apples. Locals are known to be well educated, even those who are members of the Taliban.

Many parts of the province are controlled by the insurgents.

The short trip to Wardak (just one hour from Kabul) reveals what kind of dangerous war zone Afghanistan has become over the last years.

I understand Atrafi very well since I myself went to Wardak last May to do research for my book on drone warfare.

I remember how, for the first time during all my travels in Afghanistan, I regretted the trip and wished to not have headed to the province.

Battles between soldiers and insurgents, airstrikes by both conventional aircraft and drones and bomb attacks are widespread in the province, and Atrafi describes all aspects of this reality very well.
