An Empathetic Glimpse Into The Darker Side Of Globalization: Sex Trafficking From Nigeria To Italy

Articles about sex trafficking are hard to read. They are also hard to report. Ben Taub's New Yorker article is brilliantly reported, and an easy (though heart-rending) read that pulls you right through to the end. He approaches the issue of sex trafficking in a way that is both empathetic and humanizing to the young protagonist, a Nigerian woman named Blessing.

We follow Blessing's journey from her recruitment in Edo state in Nigeria, through the dusty desert outpost of Agadez in Niger, through Libya and to Italy. Taub shows us both the intimate journey and the logistical mechanisms of trafficking – and the impact it has on women like Blessing.

It's a beautifully written piece of journalism, and definitely worth a read.
