Emran Feroz is an Afghan-Austrian journalist currently based in Stuttgart, Germany. He is regularly writing from Afghanistan, often focusing on the Middle East, Central Asia, drone warfare, refugee policies and human rights. Emran is writing in both German and English. His work has already appeared in international media outlets such as Al Jazeera, The Intercept, Alternet, The Atlantic or the New York Times and in various German and Austrian news papers and magazines.
While Afghanistan continues suffering from war and destruction, European authorities prefer to deport Afghan refugees back to their home country. As it has been revealed last year, the EU plans to deport about 80,000 Afghan refugees. A recent deal — signed by Brussels and the Afghan government — should make this happen faster.
However, reality in Afghanistan regularly makes clear that the country is everything but not safe. Just few days ago, the United States dropped its biggest, non-nuclear weapon — the "mother of all bombs" (MOAB) — over the country. The civilian casualties of this monstrous strike are not known yet. Journalists and human rights observers are still not allowed to enter the blast site.
In fact, NATO airstrikes are taking place in many of Afghanistan's provinces and still cause a lot of civilian casualties.
Besides, big cities like Kabul are still heavily targeted by bombings and suicide attacks.
For that reason, at least one thing is very clear in Afghanistan: Calling the country "safe" is literally MOAB — the mother of all bullshit.
