Emran Feroz is an Afghan-Austrian journalist currently based in Stuttgart, Germany. He is regularly writing from Afghanistan, often focusing on the Middle East, Central Asia, drone warfare, refugee policies and human rights. Emran is writing in both German and English. His work has already appeared in international media outlets such as Al Jazeera, The Intercept, Alternet, The Atlantic or the New York Times and in various German and Austrian news papers and magazines.
This Is Taliban Country
This film is almost five years old. However, it is still one of the best documentaries about life in Afghanistan's Taliban-controlled areas.
The man who made it, Afghan-Danish journalist Nagieb Khaja, is known for his conflict reports, and he visited the Taliban a couple of times during the last years.
"This is Taliban Country" shows how the insurgents govern in Charkh in the eastern province of Logar. The movie reveals that the Taliban have successfully created a parallel-government in many parts of Afghanistan.
Especially today, in 2018, this should be pointed out again and again. At the moment, we can see how the Kabul government is losing more and more power while the insurgents have yet again regained much of their strength.
According to recent estimates, the Taliban control half of the country, especially rural areas. At the same time, even Washington considers to talk with the insurgents face-to-face to end one of the US's longest wars in history.
