The New Yorker Recommends

In our hectic times, guiding tips are always useful.

"The New Yorker Recommends" is a new compilation from this renowned magazine, presenting expert recommendations, every week, from the worlds of books, music, movies, and TV. In short, the New Yorker authors share their "cultural enthusiasms", ranging from TV shows around the globe to music albums, films and books.

"Expert" opinions are not always just about "high cultural tastes" — there are also tips on clips going viral, or hidden internet gems, such as the YouTube clip featuring Rudy Giuliani (the then New York City mayor) dressed as a drag queen and no one other than today's Mr President (then real-estate magnate) Donald J. Trump. And "Rudy Giuliani in Drag" is smooching Donald Trump — or vice versa.

There are various musical recommendations in "The New Yorker Recommends". Recent recommendations range from the composer Wang Lu’s new album “Urban Inventory” to the jazz pianist Fred Hersch's 2011 recording “Alone at the Vanguard”, the electronic musician Keith Fullerton Whitman's 2002 album “Playthroughs”, and the Dallas rapper known as Yella Beezy.

There are various Netflix recommendations, such as the German series “Babylon Berlin”, adapted from the best-selling detective novel set in Berlin in 1929 by the German author Volker Kutscher. Another TV show recommendation is from Japan — again featuring on Netflix:

“Midnight Diner” is a Japanese TV show about a tiny restaurant in a busy part of Tokyo that’s only open while most people are asleep. “When people finish their day and hurry home,” the restaurant’s chef, known only as “the Master”, explains, “my day starts.” The Master...is an exceptional listener, and he’ll cook whatever you want, so long as you supply the ingredients.

All in all, a zesty kaleidoscope of cultural tips of diverse tastes for stepping out of the ordinary are presented here — and it's fun.
