The Multiverse Theory

"You once stated that there could be an infinite number of parallel universes, so theoretically there could be a universe where I’m smarter than you" asked comedian John Oliver in a hilarious interview to the man frequently cited as the planet's most intelligent person, the theoretical physicist and international bestselling author Stephen Hawking.

"Yes" replied Hawking. "And also a universe where you’re funny."

This is one of my favorite interviews of all time. Despite the fact of never actually submerging into the theory of multiverses (which is more and more accepted among scientist) this roast from professor Hawking towards Oliver explains with voluminous clarity, the theory itself. There could be an endless amount of universes, with a numberless of parallel realities. The craziest, most bizarre of our imaginations… Might be real out there, somewhere.

‘’It is perhaps impossible to say how far apart the different universes may be, or whether they exist simultaneously in time. Some may have stars and galaxies like ours. Some may not. Some may be finite in size. Some may be infinite.’’

On March 17, 2014, scientists announced new findings that mark the first-ever direct evidence of primordial gravitational waves, this theory explains that, when the universe grew exponentially in the first tiny fraction of a second after the Big Bang, some parts expanded more quickly than others, creating bubbles of space-time that then developed into other universes with, perhaps, even their own laws of physics.

This article by Alan Lightman is long, however it is definitely a must-read for anyone who has a slight interest on philosophical science, physics and astronomy.

    Random Fun Fact:
The "inventor" of the parallel universe theory (Hugh Everett III) is the father of Mark Oliver Everett, better known as "E", frontman of The Eels. E wrote a hilariously funny, yet melancholy book about his tragic upbringing.
