Ciku Kimeria is a Kenyan author "Of goats and poisoned oranges" - (https://www.amazon.com/goats-poisoned-oranges-Ciku-Kimeria-ebook/dp/B00HBBWPI6), development consultant, adventurer and travel blogger (www.thekenyanexplorer.com). She writes both fiction and non-fiction focusing on African stories that need telling. She has worked on diverse pieces for various international and local publications including Quartz, Ozy, The East African etc. She has travelled to 45 countries – 16 of them in Africa. 153 countries to go and 63 territories!
"Of goats and poisoned oranges" has been extremely well received in Kenya and beyond. It tells the story of a Kenyan middle aged power couple and their complicated marriage. The novel explores issues of greed, revenge, betrayal and murder. It runs from the 1960s to 2013. It has been described as “Wicked, funny, poignant, wacky, human, a big ball of fun and danger”, “A unique and captivating book”, “Fun and intriguing”, “Impossible to put down once you start reading.”
She recently moved to Dakar, Senegal from Kenya to work on her second novel. She also works at as the Africa Communication Manager at a leading global strategy consulting firm.
She holds a B.S. in Management Science from MIT with minors in Urban Planning and International development studies.
The Evolution Of The Kenyan Live Music Scene On "Otherwise?"
I am eagerly awaiting any opportunity to watch the first Kenyan film to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival – Wanuri Kahiu's Rafiki – but I have already fallen in love with some of the music from the film. In particular, I can't get enough of Suzie Noma by one of Kenya's best known musicians and MCs: the extremely visionary and talented Muthoni the Drummer Queen.
African music is having its day in the sun – whether it's the global takeover of Afrobeats, the signing of musicians across the continent to international music labels, the amazing collaborations between African artists and other regional or global artists – African music is beginning to gain the global recognition it deserves. Muthoni the Drummer Queen though is here to remind us that Kenya is going to play a major role in this. "In 2020 there will be a global chart-topping hit coming from Kenya." Our currently best known international act is the band Sauti Sol, but there are plenty of other acts to watch out for.
The Blankets and Wine Festival, a pioneer in the Kenyan live music scene, turned 10 years old on 3rd November 2018. We are joined by its founder, Muthoni the Drummer Queen, to talk about its journey, the growth of live music in Kenya and how it has evolved in the past decade, as well as what the future holds for Kenyan music. The podcast name, "Otherwise?" comes from a very Kenyan way of greeting each other. The host, Brenda Wambui, started the podcast to discuss Kenyan issues in a succinct way.
I’ve always been interested in understanding, and perhaps changing, the nature of Kenya through my work, which until now has consisted of writing and speaking. This has been edifying, but I’ve come to appreciate how hard it is to keep up with.
