March 8th is International Women's Day—a day to celebrate how far we've come on issues related to women's rights, and to reflect on how far we still have to go.
Women play many different roles, and for those who choose to have children, motherhood is a big one. And an ongoing challenge for those who do choose to become parents is figuring out how to balance the demands of motherhood with career aspirations and other personal goals.
That's why I was excited to see a new podcast debut this month about the experiences of working mothers. Called The Double Shift, the podcast isn't about parenthood, or how to be a good mother—instead it explores the challenges and joys that women who are both mothers and also work face on a daily basis. From exploring what it's like to run for office as a woman with small children, to showcasing a unique childcare solution piloted in Las Vegas for shift workers, each episode highlights the experience of an individual woman, while asking more universal questions: How can we continue to do the things that we are passionate about, while also taking on the role of motherhood? What are some of the structural barriers that make it harder to do this, and how can they be addressed?
For those who are mothers, have mothers, or are interested in conversations about women's equality, it's a podcast worth listening to.
