Style in the Slum

Fashion knows no gender, no race, no class. Style tells the story of who we are and what we love, is the first impression we give, the way we show our personality. It is a great part of who we become and who we decide to be. There are no limits, from the Goth Lolitas of Tokio to the Punks in UK, everything is possible.

In the slums of Kenya, the sixth poorest country of Africa, lives a man called Stephen Okoth. This man is known in his community for his remarkable sense of style: colorful, sparkling and outstanding. The 25-year-old photographer looks for his clothes in second-hand stores and assembles his creative looks without ever repeating an outfit. Stephen says his intention is to present a different image of his homeland, instead of the usual stories of misery and poverty.

These photographs are a cheerful and vibrant proof that style is greater than hopelessness.
