So ... Turkmenistan’s Dictator Wants To Be A Superstar DJ

Turkmenistan is—right after North Korea—in the top of the world’s most repressive countries. However, its president, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov (who just changed the constitution so he can rule for life) is not your average fascist leader. He has written and performed several rap hits, and enjoys speeding in professional races, getting pumped up at the gym and throwing mind-blowing parties inside his massive yurt (with capacity for over 4,000 people).

His multiple extravagant whims go all the way from painting the entire capital of his country white to building a 24-carat gold-leaf statue of himself perched on a 20-metre-high marble cliff (his only unachieved dream was to have J-Lo singing Happy Birthday at his party in 2013). Above all, what’s his passion? Well, he considers himself more of a DJ and a rapper than a president. The article gives us sneak into his music and, perhaps most of all, to his despotic kingdom.
