Chhavi Sachdev runs Sonologue and is India's second most experienced podcaster, having started putting out podcasts on her own and for clients like the Blue Frog in 2008... long before Serial, leading her mother to tell other people "I don't know what she does. Something to do with radio on the Web."
Over the last 10 years, she has developed and launched several podcasts that are successfully running, as well as produced the LSDcast - India's definitive podcast about love, sex, and dating, and Tall Tales Takeaway -- bite size true stories, told live.
She also conducts workshops on DIY podcasting, audio editing, and consults for organizations that need a little handholding in the audio format.
To pay the bills, Chhavi is a freelance multimedia journalist and producer covering science, health, development, sustainability, and women's issues extensively. She has co-hosted episodes for BBC's World Hacks and CrowdScience and she's a frequent presenter on PRI's The World, BBC's Health Check and several Deutsche Welle programs.
She listens to podcasts while exercising, doing chores, and also when she's felled by migraines.
All hail a new podcast called Pay Attention Little Sister. It's a new series for women, featuring women over 55 who share their experiences and stories to gird each other up. The show is hosted by the beautifully spoken Jane Evans, who started The Uninvisibility Project for women to "stand in their power" – against ageism, especially – after she found that her accumulated professional experience didn't stack up against the men in her peer group; as they thrived, she noticed, women with the same chops were being edged out.
"Since time immemorial, once a woman has raised her children she has no further use to society. She is expected to disappear."
Evans refused. Evans' blog has interviews with some really incredible women (including Cindy Gallop, the founder of MakeLoveNotPorn) but the podcasts are still being released. In the first episode, since she couldn't interview herself, Evans tells her story and the idea behind the PALS podcast to her friend Cara. They take an hour to talk about women's (career) rhythms, motherhood, retirement funds and pensions, and how hard it was for Evans to find a job, any job, as she got older. They also explore the goals of the Uninvisibility project, how older women are trying to help each other out legally and professionally, and how younger women could benefit from not only older mentors (pals, really) but also advice on planning ahead.
The tone of the show really is big sisterly and I found it very interesting, even laugh-out-loud-funny at points. Evans is a wonderful presence and I think this series is going to be really good, given such a strong kick off point!
