Neil Gaiman And Kazuo Ishiguro Talk About Genre, Politics, And Immortal Beings

This dialogue between Ishiguro and Gaiman was published in 2015 — when Isiguro's Buried Giant just came out, but before he won his Nobel prize. It starts with a discussion on genres, and on why fantasy and sci-fi are looked down upon as something "not serious". But the most interesting part of this discussion is the talk about stories as beings that live far longer than humans and, gradually, mutate and acquire a character of their own. In this dialogue, this idea reads almost like a promise of eternal life — something a writer should strive for.
