Nancy is a great podcast. I've personally followed it since its beginnings, and it has the tone of a conversation between friends — hosts Kathy Tu and Tobin Low actually were best friends before they created their project — on issues related to sex, identity, relationships and more.
In Queer Money Matters, Nancy sets the focus on the economic challenges queer people face daily. In a world where discrimination sneaks into small things like finding a home, getting access to credit, or the pressure prompting people to drop out of college, queer people face particular challenges and often come up with creative solutions to overcome them and thrive.
Part of the production process involved conducting a study that underlines how queer folks have anxiety about financial issues. About a quarter of them report their sexuality or gender identity as being the direct culprits. Families, often sought after in times of hardship, are also not readily supportive of all LGBTIQ people after they come out.
Throughout the series, Tu and Low explore the legal and social patchwork of rules and norms responsible for queers' economic hardship: hiring managers' prejudices, a patchwork of regulations imposing roadblocks to closing the wage gap, the cost of adding babies to a family, and failing to get adequate health coverage for your needs are all realities the LGBTIQ community is faced with. But they also include the voices of listeners in each show — for many of us in similar or analogous situations, it can be empowering or comforting to hear it in their own voices.
