In this podcast, the authors interview two gay rights campaigners and a woman who runs a help center for LGBT refugees in Berlin.
For some LGBT refugees, their sexuality (or rather, their open attitude towards it) is the reason for their flight. This is the case of the first speaker on this podcast, Javid Nabiyev, who was forced to flee his native Azerbaijan after his government prosecuted him. But having reached Europe, many of them realize that their struggle is far from over, and they still need to fight to have their voice heard. Many, as the second speaker Gesa Rittinghaus says, still have to conceal their sexuality from their communities — despite having moved to a country where homosexuality if not prosecuted. Finally, those who, like Mahmoud Hassino (the third speaker), happen to be well-known and openly gay, face a lot of harassment, just because they happen to be LGBT refugees from Muslim countries.
