Could Victor Orban’s Policies Be Replicated In The US?

This is one of the best articles I have read which explains why Prime Minister Viktor Orban has become so powerful in Hungary. It is not only long and in-depth, but it’s written very clearly.

Many sees Orban’s rise to power and his successful moves to limit democracy upon becoming Prime Minister for a second term as creating a playbook for other populist governments. And on one hand it’s true - going after judicial system and constitutional court. Limiting freedom of press, shaming NGOs, using fear as main driver of politics. Those actions we see recreated in countries which give power to populists.

There is also many differences - mostly why different societies turn into populism, what are motivations of politicians - and this articles greatly tries to show the second layer of Orban's rule.

But what I like most is when author tries to find similarities between what is happening in Hungary and what is going on in the US. He also warns that the Republican Party in the US could become like Fidesz (Orban’s party) is in Hungary, and support Trump in a way which might threaten American democracy.

What more can I say? It’s a fascinating read.
