This interactive story tackles two problems. One – how to make this photo reportage more than "just another list of photos of war" and second – how to offer something more than "just another slideshow".
Once we sat down with the photographer who spent over a month in Mosul, Iraq, during the battle which retook the city, we started to wonder about those issues. The answer shocked us at first. We wanted the audience to understand more about those events and provide extra context but avoid doing this by placing simple text next to photos. Somehow this wouldn't do.
So when we enlarged the photos as much as we could and removed any other elements, we were left only with one choice: to add audio narrative. In over 30 minutes, the photographer takes us on a tour of Mosul during the battle. He shares more information and details, trying to paint a bigger picture of the conflict, but also offers intimate details of what we see in each photograph.
