African Movies To Stream On Netflix

I love Okayafrica for many things, including their wonderful lists. This particular one does not disappoint. All the amazing trailers will leave you wanting more, and hopefully get you on Netflix to discover these movies.

Weddings can be fascinating, but I believe that the most exciting are Nigerian ones. Even as a Kenyan, my bucket-list includes attending a Nigerian wedding in Nigeria. They are intense, multi-day affairs, steeped in tradition while also having ultra-modern elements. That, plus the fact that Nigerian movies and Nollywood are a must-watch, makes the first film sound very exciting. The Wedding Party trailer will have you in stitches.

The Wedding Party — This Nigerian comedy by Kemi Adetiba follows the lives of a Nigerian couple played by Adesua Etomi and Banky W as they prepare for their upcoming wedding. If you’ve ever been privy to a wedding party, you know that it’s full of unexpected surprises and chaos.

If you are a history buff, you definitely do not want to miss out on this drama set during the jasmine revolution in Tunisia.

As I open my eyes — Leyla Bouzid‘s drama is set on the eve of the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia. The protagonist, Farah, a rebellious young woman joins a rock band to her family’s dismay. Despite their disapproval, she’s determined to make a name for herself and continues singing even when the government attempts to silence her.

If you are just now discovering that Guinea, Guinea Bissau and Equatorial Guinea are three different countries on the African continent, then you might want to celebrate this new-found knowledge with a film from the latter. Where the road runs out would be a great place to start.

Either way, I encourage you to watch all of the trailers. At the very least, you will stumble upon a wonderful movie that you would not have heard about if it wasn't for Okayafrica.
