Today I was looking for something lighthearted to listen to. With only around 10 days to the end of the year, the holiday season round the corner, I have no energy for politics, depressing news or anything that will force me to reflect too deeply on the tumultuous year that has been 2018 from a global standpoint. I was looking for some interesting drama, but none in which anyone gets hurt. I stumbled on this podcast with two amazing hosts who discuss a variety of issues (mostly serious ones), but I came across this episode on scammers and knew that I had found what I was looking for.
"The scam economy is entering its baroque phase." From Ponzi schemes to fake royals to impostors in the tech and wellness space, our guide to scammers both amusing and insidious.
While scamming cannot really be called a victim-less crime, it is definitely somewhat more entertaining than other crimes. Everyone has been scammed. If you've not yet been scammed, your day is about to come. As I listen to this stories, I smile with embarrassment as I remember all the times I have fallen for or almost fallen for a scam. Some stories I will take with me to the grave as I don't want to be asked, "How did you fall for that?" It's a constant reminder that sometimes things are not always what they seem and that every now and then, some skepticism and high levels of mistrust can go a long way in keeping one safe from one day having to share their own scamming story.
