12,000 Years Of History, Set To Vanish Forever

Hasankeyf is a 12,000 year-old city in Batman province, Turkey's south-east.

Over the course of history, Hasankeyf has survived all kinds of misfortunes, but now a hydro-electric power station is threatening to make Hasankeyf disappear forever.

The Turkish government claims that the controversial Ilisu Dam project will provide electricity and irrigation essential to the development of the area. But this comes at a high cost: the ancient city will vanish beneath the floods.

The solution offered by the Turkish government sounds like a joke: Historical edifices will be moved to new areas, to what they have called an "archaeological park", while close to 80,000 people will lose their homes.
